ITANAGAR, Oct 29: Responding to the news report published in this daily, “High Court directs Arunachal Government to cancel construction of 44 hydropower dams over the Siang”, the Department of Hydropower Development, today claimed that there is no such direction from the High Court.
The PIL No.10/2014 was heard on September 6 this year and after hearing from both parties, the Court observed that there was no reason to keep the said PIL pending as the same become infructuous. So, the Court has closed the PIL with a direction to the state government to take decision to go ahead with the construction of dams, considering the safety, security and all other aspects of the affected people. However, there was no direction of by High Court to terminate 44 hydropower dams over River Siang, the department said in a statement while terming the news report "totally misleading to the common people."
The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has proposed 3 (three) projects only on the Siang river and other projects were allotted at the tributaries of Siang river which are mostly 'run of the river' type projects. There shall be no displacement or submergence of vast land in 'run of the river' projects, the department said.
Informing that the state government is also terminating the memorandum of agreement (MoA) where there is no progress at project site, the department said that so far, the state government has terminated 11(Eleven) projects in the Siang Basin and as such there is no question of direction from the Hon’ble Court to cancel 44 dams over the Siang River.
Further, the Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh has never signed MoA of 233 numbers of Hydro Power projects in the state as alleged in the news report, asserted the Department.
