ITANAGAR, Sep 7: Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu have extended their warm greetings to the people on the festive occasion of Onam.
In his message, the Governor said that Onam is the most popular festival of Kerala and is celebrated with great reverence, enthusiasm, pomp and gaiety. The festival of Onam is dedicated to King Mahabali who was an Asur (Demon) by birth but graduated to Godhood by the virtue of his noble deeds. The reign of King Mahabali, the most just and benevolent king ever born, is considered as the golden age of Kerala. During his reign no needy person ever went empty handed from his door. The reminiscence about King Mahabali has it, that the king, in order to keep his words, gave away his entire Kingdom, i.e. the earth and the space and his corporeal possession ‘his body’ too, which were asked for by the God and acquiesced by the King. As a reward for his sacrifice, he was blessed by the Almighty to remain eternally in the mind of the people of Kerala. His annual visit day to earth accordingly is celebrated as festival ‘Onam’, the Governor said.
Khandu has conveyed his best wishes and greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion of Onam, which began on August 30 last and would conclude with Thiruvonam on Thursday, the most auspicious and significant day of the 10-day festival.
“I join my brothers and sisters from Kerala in this joyous festival. Let us all together welcome the return of the legendary King Mahabali aka Maveli and hope that peace, harmony and good health prevails on earth,” Khandu said in a message this evening.
As a goodwill gesture on the auspicious occasion on behalf of the people of the state, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the members of the Malayali community, who had served and are serving in Arunachal Pradesh.
“The contribution of our brothers and sisters from Kerala, who opted to serve the people of Arunachal Pradesh in various categories, since the day of the state’s inception and continue to do so, is immeasurable. People of Arunachal wish them a very happy Onam,” Khandu added. He expressed hope that festivals like Onam would strengthen the brotherhood between different communities of a diverse country like India.
