Itanagar, Dec 26: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.) participated in the 100th birth anniversary celebration of Bharat Ratna, Late Atal Behari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi on 25th December. The Governor paid tribute to Vajpayee and recalled the contributions of the former Prime Minister towards the nation in the function, which was organised by Gandhi Smiti and Darshan Samriti, New Delhi.
Parnaik said that Late Vajpayee was a distinguished parliamentarian and stalwart leader, who served as a member of both houses of parliament for four decades. He said that he was a versatile genius, who was a skilled politician, poet, sharp thinker, and an excellent orator.
The Governor said that as a visionary Prime Minister, Late Vajpayee was a symbol of good governance and gave the country a new direction. He said that it was under his leadership that India became a nuclear power.
The Governor said that Atal ji, while initiating a new beginning in bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, inaugurated the ‘Delhi to Lahore’ bus service named ‘Sada-e-Sarhad’ and as the first passenger, visited Pakistan and met the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Shri Nawaz Sharif.
The Governor recalled the Kargil Conflict and said that despite international advice not to violate Pakistan’s border, Vajpayee Government patiently but firmly took action to liberate the Indian Territory.
Highlighting infrastructure development projects, initiated by Late Vajpayee, the Governor said that the ‘Golden Quadrilateral’ highway project was initiated to connect India's major industrial, agricultural, and cultural centers. Additionally, the century-old Cauvery water dispute was resolved, task forces were formed for structural frameworks, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission was established to accelerate electrification, and the development of national highways and airports, the National Security Council, the Economic Advisory Council, and the Trade and Industry Council were undertaken.
The Governor said that during the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was established in 2004 to provide impetus to the development of the North Eastern States, who had long suffered isolation and negligence.
Adding spiritual cultural aura to the extraordinary occasion, a special programme of the epic ‘Ramayana’ was performed in dance form by more than 50 artists.
