ITANAGAR, Sep 5: Department of Social Justice & Empowerment & Tribal Affairs (SJETA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rajiv Gandhi University on September 3 last for establishing a new Tribal Research Institute(TRI) in Arunachal Pradesh.
The MoU is the outcome of a series of proposals put forward by the state government to the central Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) for setting up of new Tribal Research Institute(s) in Arunachal. As per the agreement, notable works to be undertaken by the proposed TRI with the identified academic partner Departments of Sociology, Anthropology and Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies, RGU are- research studies, evaluation studies, training/ seminar/ workshop, tribal festivals, baseline survey, publications, documentaries/ documentation and exchange visits. 
The state government was represented by the Director, SJETA Yumlam Kaha and RGU, which is a Central University, by its Registrar Professor Tomo Riba. RGU VC Professor Saket Kushwaha along with other academicians and officers were present during the MoU signing.
It is worth mentioning that Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) provides support to the state governments for activities relating to cultural conservation of tribal areas in the country based on local requirements. Pursuing this policy, government has set up new Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) in the states without TRIs and currently such institutes are functioning in 24 states and one Union Territory. The core responsibility of these institutes is to function as an institution of knowledge & research and a think tank for tribal development and preservation of tribal cultural heritage. 
MoTA has a digital repository with web address http://tribal.nic.in/repository where documents, folk songs, photos/videos regarding tribal evolution, place of origin, lifestyle, eating habits, architecture, education, traditional art, folk dances and other anthropological details are stored.
