ITANAGAR, Aug 30: Two universities -- Dibrugarh University, Mizoram University, and three National Institutes of Technology -- Arunachal, Manipur and Nagaland, are joining together to study plastic waste management in five Northeastern states of India, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. The study is being sponsored by Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR). 
The ICSSR in a press release stated that after rigorous assessment in two stages by  experts and interaction of the shortlisted candidates, ICSSR has selected the proposal from amongst 3801 project proposals received from across the country.
The project is being led by five Project Directors. While Dr. Adani Azhoni, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, NIT Manipur will study the Manipur State, Dr. Nabam Rich, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at NIT Arunachal, Dr. Nzanthung Ngulie, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at NIT Nagaland, Dr. G. Kanato Chophy, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Dibrugarh University and Dr. Lalsangzela Sailo, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, Mizoram University will lead the respective states in Arunachal, Nagaland, Assam and Mizoram. 
As plastic products become an essential part of everyday lives, plastic waste has become a pressing environmental issue globally. The project will evaluate the effectiveness of the Swatch Bharat Mission for plastic waste management in five North-eastern states. It will investigate various dimensions of waste management, including waste segregation, collection, and disposal systems and how has the Government scheme impacted the far-flung regions such as the Northeast India. Besides evaluating the awareness generated among the population regarding plastic waste and the promotion of alternative practices such as recycling and reducing plastic consumption, it will explore the effectiveness of educational and awareness programs, community participation, and stakeholder engagement in fostering behavioral change and sustainable waste management practices. Aspects related to education and training in plastic waste management, provision of incentives and regulations to enforce penalties and fines to defaulters will be investigated to provide insights to public policymaking, stated Dr. Azhoni.
