ZIRO/MEDZIPHEMA, Dec 13: A group of 18 Mithun farmers from Ziro Valley participated in an exposure tour to the National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM) in Medziphema, Nagaland, on Friday. The tour, organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Lower Subansiri District, was led by Dr. Bamin Rilung, the Veterinary Officer of Ziro.
The farmers, keen on enhancing their knowledge of Mithun husbandry, were taken around the NRCM farm, where they were introduced to the semi-intensive system of Mithun management. Dr. Kobu Khate, a specialist in Mithun husbandry, provided valuable insights on the scientific practices for breeding and raising Mithuns in this system.
An interactive session was held with the farmers, where the Director of NRCM, Dr. Girish Patil, along with other scientists, discussed critical issues faced by Mithun farmers. They stressed the importance of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination, the need for maintaining high-quality breeding bulls, and other relevant aspects of Mithun farming. Dr. Patil also emphasized the need for sustainable practices to ensure the health and productivity of the Mithun population.
In addition, Dr. Plabita Goswami and Dr. Vikram R provided detailed information on various diseases affecting Mithuns and the reproductive health of the animals. Their presentations aimed to enhance the farmers' understanding of Mithun health management and breeding techniques.
The exposure tour concluded with a vote of thanks from the Training Coordinator Dr Jayanta Kumar Chamuah, who expressed gratitude to the experts and participants for their active involvement. This visit is expected to significantly improve the knowledge and practices of Mithun farmers in Ziro Valley, fostering better animal husbandry in the region
