ITANAGAR, Mar 22: Asserting that central government decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for getting subsidized food grains is going to severely hit and hamper those living in remote areas regarding their legal access to food grains, Member of Parliament, Ninnong Ering has called upon the government to withdraw its order keeping in view its consequences on poorer section of society.

The move comes despite the Supreme Court’s interim order in October 2015 that no citizen can be denied a service or subsidy on the basis of Aadhar card. Regardless the government passed an order making Aadhar mandatory for targeted public distribution system (PDS), added Ering.

Resenting the decision, Ering said the targeted public distribution system (PDS) is the largest subsidy program in the country and lifeline of the poor and marginalized as it provides 5kg food grain per month at a subsidized rate of Rupees 2-3 per kg.

Making Aadhar mandatory will exclude many people especially in remote areas in India. People in North East are going to be most affected and are at risk of being left out, Ering further added.
