DURPAI, Jan 28: Expressing concern over the ongoing Arunachal –Assam boundary issues, the residents of Durpai in Lower Siang District today opposed the inclusion of  Arunachal’s land in Assam and urged the members of the Regional Committee of both the states to revisit the village physically.
Speaking to the media, Gaon Burah of Durpai Village, Tari Nyicyor said that during the last inspection by the Regional Committee members on September 2022, officials didn’t inform anything about the visit to the locals including him. "The real victims are the locals; they should have asked about the ground reality to the villagers. Instead they (Regional Committee) inspected few locations and submitted their report as per their whims," the village head claimed.
Nyicyor further said that reliable sources have disclosed that Assam has sought 60Sq Km of land from Arunachal especially from Durpai village area terming it unacceptable. "If the reports are true then the whole of our village, community land and forest areas will be carved out from our ancestral village," he lamented.
Durpai village was established way back in 1943 and our family members used to carry out irrigation/cultivation up to Rajgharali area, but due to earthquakes and other natural calamities, we had to leave those areas, the GB added. He further urged both Chief Ministers and  MLAs of Assam and Arunachal to physically visit the area for an amicable solution.
"There is not a single tree planted by Forest department of Assam nor a single structure erected by Assam in the area nearby Durpai village for them to claim the land," said Gram Panchayat Chairperson Durpai, Bato Karlo Bui. She further said that the land belongs to the people of Durpai and Arunachal Pradesh. "Demanding 60 SqKm of land is irrational. We appeal the Assam Government to take back its proposal and follow the Namsai Declaration of 'As it is, where it is'," the GPC said.
Megem Nyicyor, a local youth leader informed that villagers held a meeting regarding the boundary issue and unanimously resolved to oppose curving out of 60Sqkm of land from Durpai village. "We will soon submit a memorandum to the local MLA Kardo Nyigyor about our resolution," he added.
