NAMSAI, Jun 26:    Deputy Chief Minister today said that there is a corridor of drug trafficking from Changlang to Namsai, Lohit, Anjaw, Lower Dibang Valley and East Siang Districts to western part of Arunachal Pradesh which needs to be broken. 

 "Drug addiction is harmful for society and together we must wage a war against it to eradicate it,” he said while attending the International Day against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was observed at Namsai today.

     He said that Eastern Arunachal from Longding to Dibang Valley Districts is a very prosperous region and the area has huge prospects in agriculture and horticulture.

The region has huge prospects of tourism development too as we have potential tourist circuits like Namsai-Parashuramkund-Tezu-Roing-Mayodia and is well connected by road now.  Soon we will have railway and air connectivity too, the DCM said.

 

Terming drug menace as great threat to the peaceful environment and serenity of the region besides destroying the younger generations, he called on the government, teachers and the community to play their respective roles.

He lauded the role of Community Based Organizations and Women Welfare Society of Namsai District for their efforts in eradicating the drug menace from the district by creating drug awareness campaign and running Drug De-addiction Centre in the district.

He said that the De-addiction Centre at Lathao would be converted into a Rehabilitation Centre and Board Members from Guwahati would soon be visiting the Centre. He also cautioned that those who are committing illegal acts with the promotion and selling of banned substances are liable to be booked under the appropriate section of Indian Penal Code.

Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, etc., Dr Mohesh Chai said that opium was taken as medicine in earlier days but the changing trends of using it as a substance of drug addiction is quite disturbing.

The shifting trends from opium to brown sugar and the way women and youths are falling prey to such addictions is quite alarming for society, he said adding that the government needs to frame a proper policy to address the drug menace and to save the future generations from falling prey to it. 

He informed that the State Govt has already kept fund for alternate crops for poppy cultivation and assured that it will be implemented soon in the opium cultivated districts where people cultivated it as main source of their income.

He lauded one Tewa Manpoong, who was once addicted to drugs but recovered; now working and helping the addicted people for their de-addiction and rehabilitation for the last14 years.  

 Parliamentary Secretary for Planning & Investment, etc Chau Zingnu Namchoom and Commissioner (Tax & excise), Anirudh Singh also spoke.

At Itanagar, the day was observed by the Capital Police and by awareness campaigns at various locations were held.

The team distributed pamphlets to the youths and parents at Gompa, IG Park,Bank Tinali And Ganga Tinali.  

Interacting with students at C Sector government School  Itanagar, SDPO Kamdam Sikom advised students to stay away from the menace.

At Hollongi, the 12th Bn NDRF organized an awareness rally.
