ITANAGAR, May 18:  The detention period of activist Sol Dodum and 35 others who were detained under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by the police during the recent 72-hour bandh has been extended to 30 days. They were initially been arrested for a period of 12 days. This latest development comes in the wake of growing calls from various corners for the release of the activists.
The decision was made upon the request of the District Administration of Itanagar Capital Region, highlighting concerns related to public order and the maintenance of essential services in the area.
In its order, the Joint Secretary of Home stated that the District Magistrate of Capital, Itanagar, had requested an extension of the detention period for the said individuals for up to 30 days from the date of their detention. Therefore, exercising the powers conferred under Section 3(2) of the said Act, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh has approved the order of detention passed by the District Magistrate of Capital, Itanagar, vide No. DM/ICC/APUAPA/01/2023-3 dated May 8, 2023, and has also extended the period of detention for the said individuals for up to 30 days from the date of their detention.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Commissioner Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) Talo Potom, while justifying the move informed that there are still some threats from the bandh callers. "Many organizations have been demanding the release of detainees with threats, so we cannot release them at this time," he said.
The DC also compared the bandh callers to urban terrorists who are against the development of the state. "No one has come forward to realize their mistake and give assurances not to repeat such bandh calls. Therefore, with precautionary measures, I have to extended their remands," he said.
