NEW DELHI, May 4 (PTI): India saw 6.2% more deaths in 2020, the year Covid-19 struck, as compared to 2019, according to the Registrar General of India report released on Tuesday.
76.4 lakh people died in the country in 2019, while the figure climbed to 81.2 lakh the following year. Of these, 1.48 lakh deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.
However fatalities due to Covid in 2021 rose sharply to 3.32 lakh, largely due to the second wave dominated by the deadly Delta variant.
Tne cumulative figure for Covid deaths in India since early 2020 stands at 5,23,889, as per health ministry data released on Tuesday, May 3,2022.
11 States/UTs - Punjab, Chandigarh, Mizoram, Haryana, West Bengal, A&N Islands, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat- have achieved more than 90% registration of deaths within the prescribed time period of 21 days.
The figure remained at less than 50% for 8 states- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur, Ladakh, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
