ITANAGAR, Jul 14: An executive order directing all hotels and restaurants within the administrative boundary of the Naharlagun sub-division to remove signboards displaying the word ‘beef’ by July 18 next, has became a topic of much debate on social media with netizens expressing their strong opinions.
On Thursday, the Executive Magistrate, Naharlagun  issued the order directing all eateries to remove signboards displaying the word ‘beef’ by July 18 next as it may hurt sentiments of a section of the community. Failure to comply would also entail a penalty including cancellation of trading license.
Speaking to this reporter, Extra Assistant Commissioner Tamo Dada said that the order was issued by his office as a “preventive measure so that the people do not make a religious issue out of it in the future.”  
“People should not get confused with the order as there is no ban on consuming beef,” Dada said, while informing that a verbal complaint was received by his office from “a group of people stating that such signboards hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community." However, he did not reveal the name of the group.
The order (Under Section 144 CrPC)  stated ‘ it has been brought to the notice that there are numerous hotels and restaurants mushrooming within the administrative boundary of Naharlagun sub-division with the word 'Beef" written on them. Whereas the District Administration of ICR believes in the secular spirit of our Indian Constitution but such open display of word 'beef' on the signboards of such hotels and restaurants may hurt the sentiments of some section of the community and may create animosity between different groups of the community. Therefore, so as to maintain peace in the community and to continue the spirit of secularism and brotherhood within the community, Executive Magistrate, Naharlagun Sub-Division hereby directs all such hotels and restaurants who have written word 'Beef' on their signboards to remove such word by July 18 next.
The order further read that failure to comply will lead to fine of Rs 2000 and cancellation of  Trading license will be initiated.
