YAZALI/CHULLYU, Mar 11: 

 

 

In an effort to segregate waste at source to reduce the burning of waste and dumping in landfills, several waste banks were inaugurated at Chullyu village in Lower Subansiri district on Saturday. The community-based waste management model is an initiative by the Further and Beyond Foundation and is supported by the Royal Enfield and Department of Tourism.

Co-founder of Further and Beyond Foundation, Merwyn Coutinho while introducing the program to the participants dwelt on the importance of segregating waste at source. The waste banks installed at Chullyu village will be instrumental in facilitating effective waste management, he said.  

Under the policy, the community agreed to segregate dry waste at source and compost the kitchen waste. A nominal user fee will be implemented to manage the community-led program while violators will be penalised. 

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Director Bengia Manna Sonam appreciated the villagers and NGOs for coming forward with such noble initiatives to keep the village a waste-free zone.  “There is a huge scope for community tourism as well as rural tourism. Tourists from different parts of the world will come to see rural India, its culture and tradition; so we all should focus more on rural tourism and keeping our villages waste- free by taking up such initiatives."
She further appreciated the villagers of Chullyu for taking a resolution to avoid littering in the village areas, burning garbage etc. She also encouraged the villagers to develop more homestays, village guides, and other tourism activities to boost rural tourism.
Earlier, ZPM Nabam Biju who attended the event as chief guest inaugurated the Community Based Waste Management System. He also appealed to the villagers to use the Waste Management System and assured all possible help for the development of tourism activities in the village.
Meanwhile, Committee Member of ‘Ngul Chullyu’, Bengia Ama informed the gathering that the village has already taken on waste management. We have taken the decision not to throw waste in rivers, not to use plastic materials, or burn waste in the village jurisdiction. The decision was taken after various workshops and awareness programmes conducted by the Department of Tourism and Waste Bank, he added.
Among others,  Chairperson Gram Panchayat Member- Taba Handa, AE-PHED –Yazali  Likha Topu and members of  Waste Bank- NGO also attended the event.
