ITANAGAR, Apr 27:  The Dibang Multipurpose Hydro Project Downstream Affected Area Committee (DMHPDSAAC) has raised concerns about the potential impact of the Dibang Multipurpose Hydro Project on over 50,000 people living downstream. The committee submitted a memorandum to the state government and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) highlighting the apprehensions of downstream communities.
According to the DMHPDSAAC Chairman, Gotem Tayeng, villagers in the downstream areas fear that the project will cause extensive damage to the local flora and fauna, as well as their own livelihoods. The committee has requested that the authorities conduct a cumulative downstream impact assessment of multiple projects in the Dibang basin to understand the potential harm that could be caused.
In the memorandum, the committee has also sought a status report for downstream project-affected families, a re-examination of the impact on forest rights, the construction of embankments on both sides of the river bank downstream, revenue sharing with the state government, and the constitution of a dam review panel of experts to assess climate change and its impact, with the help of local affected people.
The DMHPDSAAC's concerns come as the government has been pursuing ambitious hydroelectric projects in the region. While these projects are aimed at providing energy security to the nation, they have often resulted in the displacement of local communities and environmental degradation. The committee's memorandum highlights the need to strike a balance between development and the protection of local people and the environment, added the Chairman.
