Ziro, Jul 1: In a significant move towards ‘Plastic Free Ziro’ campaign, Deputy Commissioner, Lower Subansiri District, Oli Perme has handed over the final instalment of free cloth bags to Market Welfare Committees of both Hapoli and Old Ziro Markets at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hall on Tuesday. With this, her commitment to hand over 10,000 cloth bags to customers through Market Welfare Committees has been fulfilled.
While handing over the cloth bags, Perme encouraged the SHGs associated with ArSRLM and Bazar Welfare Committees to make the initiative ‘Plastic Free Ziro’ a model for rest of the districts of the state. She also suggested them to make other useful cloth items like table cloths, window and door curtains etc. using the local Apatani designs. She also issued an order for complete phasing out of use, storage, distribution and sale of single-use plastic carry bags across the district by August 15.
ADC Himani Meena suggested for tying-up with Vishal Mega Mart and other big shops for market linkage. She asked the NGOs associated with ArSRLM to keep the rate of the cloth bags reasonable. She further suggested the NGOs manufacturing the cloth bags to maintain the identity of Ziro Valley and Apatani Culture while printing motifs and occasion-based captions be printed to make the cloth bags relevant and to increase their demands. She also suggested for joint inspection with the market committees after August 15, and initiations of strict penal actions against violators.
‘Plastic Free Ziro’ is the initiative of former DC Vivek H.P in collaboration with Power Grid under CSR, aimed at eliminating single use plastics in the district. As part of this effort, a cloth bag manufacturing unit has been set up in an unused government school hostel and SHGs have been onboarded for stitching cloth bags. The manufacturing unit not only tackles plastic pollution but also provides employment and opportunity for economic empowerment. These cloth bags are featuring Apatani tribal motifs and messages such as Clean and Green Ziro, Plastic Free Ziro etc. to raise awareness and instil a sense of pride in the community. Further, as an incentive to discourage the use of single use plastic bags, these cloth bags are being distributed free of cost for an initial period to customers through Market Welfare Committees.
Among others, SDO Hage Tarung, CO Mide Bage, BMM Rimpi Tage, officials of ArSRLM, members of SHGs and Bazar Welfare Committees attended the program.
