YUPIA, Jul 28: Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karmacharis, M. Venkatesan and his Principal Private Secretary, Shashank Singh,  attended a meeting with the Safai Karamcharis and waged workers of Papum Pare district on Friday.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Papum Pare, Cheechung Chukhu underscored the contribution of waged labourers and said “Although the daily wage labours are placed at the bottom of the employment hierarchy, they work hard, every day to keep the wheels of progress turning and this cuts across all sectors and industries."
He further expressed hope that the interactive session with the Chairman, National Commission for Safai Karmacharis will bear fruitful observations and benefit the workers.
Shashank Singh spoke about the Minimum Wages Act and the importance of Employees State Insurance (ESI) registrations for low earning workers.
“ESI is a social security scheme offered by the Government of India as per the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948. The scheme provides protection to employees against disablement and death due to employment injury, sickness, and maternity,” Mr Singh informed while urging the HoDs to disseminate information regarding ESI and "those employing more than 10 workers to work out modalities to register them under ESI."
Teri Taniya Reb, EE, Urban development highlighted the works carried out by the 34 Safai Karamcharis engaged by the department. These Safai Karamcharis posted at Yupia, Doimukh, Sagalee and Kimin are responsible for the door to door waste collection and segregation.
Nabam Takam, President All Arunachal Pradesh Workers Union, Papum Pare unit highlighted issues faced by the waged labourers, including non-regularisation of service even after serving for 20-30 years, irregular payment of wages, no government accommodation and scarcity of tools and implements for the labourers.
Workers from PHED, PWD and UD departments shared their views during the program.
The Chairman and the Principal Private Secretary took note of the grievances faced by them and suggested for the formation of a Safai Karmachari monitoring committee with DC as the Chairman to monitor and resolve the issues faced by them.
Among others ZPC Nabam Yakum, Omey Apang, ADC Incharge, HoDs , PRI members and safai karamcharis and other waged labourers attended the interactive session. DIPRO.
