ITANAGAR, Apr 1: The Itanagar capital police seized a huge cache of drugs worth Rs. 90 lakhs and arrested 21 drug peddlers including a Dimapur based man believed to be the biggest supplier of drugs in the state, in the last couple of weeks within the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).
Addressing the media today, Capital SP Jimmy Chiram said that among the 21 arrested, the highest seizure of heroin (311gm) worth Rs. 30 lakhs was made from Dimapur-based drug supplier Jabir Hussain (28) and his accomplice Reena Biswas (29).
This is the highest drug seizure ever made by the capital police in a single case within weeks from various locations of the ICR.
The operation against drugs started on March 22 last, following the arrest of one Jumba Loya of Dokum Colony, Naharlagun. The police seized 18.37gms of heroin from his possession. Accordingly NLG-PS case no.37/23 US 21(a)/27/27(A)/29 NDPS Act was registered and a team of police under the supervision of SDPO Dekio Gumja was formed.
“Subsequently, the team rooted out the information on the drug supplier from Loya. Thereafter, the police went on to arrest 4 more drug peddlers from Banderdewa and Gumto areas with a total125.28gm of suspected heroin,” the SP said.
The police arrested Sanjay Doley (29) from Gumto and Moniram Das (24) and his accomplice Kunal Chetry (26) and Rohit Borah (20) from Banderdewa.
Chiram also said, in a separate case based on intelligence inputs, police on March 28 arrested one Amir Ali (30), an Assam-based drug supplier who came to supply drugs at Sood village, Naharlagun.
Case no. 13/23 US 279/336/337/427/353IPC R/w 21(b), 27/29 NDPS act was registered at Papu hill police station. Thereafter, the police arrested Debojit Mili (22), Habijul Islam (28), and Jabir Hussain (28). All arrested are from Lakhimpur district, except Jabir Husain who is from Karimganj district of Assam,” he said.
Further, the same police later set up to trap the supplier of Amir Ali and arrested Dimapur-based supplier Jabir Hussain and his accomplice Reena Biswas. Further investigation of Jabir revealed the names of many of his associates who procured drugs from him and then sold them to youngsters in ICR.
“The police believes that the arrest of Jabir Husain will comprehensively hamper drug trade within ICR. Jabir is the biggest supplier of drugs in the state and has sold drugs worth more than Rs. 3 crores in ICR,” the SP said, adding that police is committed to bring down the entire supply chain by arresting all his associates.
Meanwhile, the Itanagar police team on March 31 arrested habitual drug peddlers Dora Tanu, Rajan Brahma, Raj Subha, and Racho Ticho under case vide 77/23 US 21(b),27/27(A)/29 of NDPS Act.
“Likewise, the Banderdewa police arrested one Binbi Ligo, Chimpu police arrested Jakla Boro and the Nirjuli police arrested John Tawe and Dependra Singh Shekawat with a huge cache of drugs in their possession,” he added.
While lauding the efforts of the police team under the Anti Drugs Squad (ADS) headed by DySP K Dirchi, Chiram appealed to the people to share information about any such illicit activities and also reiterated their warning to drug peddlers and suppliers to either mend their ways or face jail time.
