Itanagar, Jul 16: The Deputy Commissioner Capital Itanagar Talo Potom convened a meeting with the Naharlagun Bazar Welfare Committee, Arunachal Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries in connection with the order issued by EAC Naharlagun on July 13th last directing all hotels and restaurants to remove the word beef from their signboards.
EAC Tamo Dada informed that a group of people had approached him with a request to look into the matter of display of word 'beef' outside eateries which may hurt the sentiments of some section of the community. "Considering their sentiments and in order to prevent any conflict amongst denizens due to it, the order was issued as a preventive measure and with the intention of evoking peaceful coexistence amongst the denizens," he said.
The official further added that the order in no way meant to ban eating beef or its selling but "to just remove the word beef and using other alternative to specify availability of beef in the particular hotels."
Chairman Naharlagun Bazaar Welfare Society, Kipa Nai said that the trading license are being provided by the Itanagar Municipal Corporation and the names are already proposed while applying for it. He said that the majority of  Arunachalees have been eating beef since time immemorial and  both beef eaters and non eaters have been peacefully residing and hence requested that the order be withdrawn.
Terming Arunachal a 'mini India' where all communities reside peacefully and such categorisation provides easy identification for beef eaters, APCCI representative requested to withdraw the order while suggesting that the size of the hoarding outside hotels may be minimised if needed.
Clarifying on the matter, the DC said that the order was issued by the EAC as a preventive measure with good intention and not to give communal colour to it. "The order would be withdrawn and I request the denizens not to let the matter blow out of proportion which might result in communal discord, "Potom said while seeking the cooperation of the media in minimising the trolling.
The DC also said that selling of meats and fish and vegetables along the Right of Way would not be allowed. He said there is no restriction on eating any kind of meat but open display of meat along the highway portrays an ugly picture of the Capital. He said that the meat shops can display their sign board at proper distance from highway.
All administrative officers of capital Itanagar attended the meeting.
