Namsai, May 29: A three-week training programme on scientific beekeeping for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and rural women of Namsai district concluded today, at the Arunachal University of Studies (AUS). The programme was organized by BMMU Namsai ArSRLM under day NRLM in collaboration with the Arunachal University of Studies, Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh.
A total of 45 members from different SHGs of Namsai district has undergone the training on Scientific Beekeeping. SHGs were imparted training on management of beehives and its various products.
Beekeeping has been part of our lives for centuries, said Dr. Ashwani Lochan- President (AUS), who distributed Bee boxes to all the beneficiaries (SHGs) on the occasion.
Like many other skill development training programs run at the campus of AUS, this training would also help the SHGs to earn livelihood in a sustainable manner. He spoke of rubber honey which finds application as medicine and holds high market value. Pure honey has demand all over India and production of it in large quantities is always in need.    
He motivated the SHGs by his words and asked them to train members of their family and community in beekeeping so everyone can get benefit from it. Dr. Lochan suggested SHGs to establish a cooperative unit in Namsai which would help them secure better funding for scale-ups from the center and the state government. Processing and packaging of honey and its products is also of vital importance and the secret of getting higher returns, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, VC (AUS), Dr. B. Mohan Kumar highlighted the nutritious and medicinal value of honey along with its importance in improving the crop production. The program was part of livelihood generation scheme from the Government. He encouraged the trainee SHGs to continue practicing and learning the beekeeping trade and take it forward to become future entrepreneurs. He congratulated the trainees on successfully completing the training program. 
This training will form a base for the SHGs to start their own venture, said Program Director (AUS), Dr. Rani Jha. SHGs were imparted training on various aspects of beekeeping with knowledge of various products such as honey, propolis, royal jelly, wax and apitherapy. She reiterated the commitment of AUS in making India as a global leader by skilling the youths and women and promised to provide all the help needed to the SHGs and their community in making them earn sustainable livelihood and raise economic standards of the NE region.
