ITANAGAR, Mar 28: The first phase of agitation launched by the Galo Students Union (GSU) with a 24 hour bandh call in all the Galo inhabited areas of West Siang, East Siang and Upper Subansiri on Monday saw a total shutdown of markets, business establishments including government offices with vehicles remaining off the road in all these areas. The bandh call which was endorsed by the Galo Welfare Society was fully supported by all the district units of GWS, federal units of GSU, all the clan based and other allied organisations of the three districts.

Meanwhile, the GSU thanked the people for the overwhelming support during a review meeting held after the end of the first phase of the bandh call at Aalo. The house also took serious note of the lackadaisical attitude of the state government and strongly condemned its double standards.

‘The mantra of "Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas" should be followed in letter and spirit. No state can move forward by marginalising a particular community. The State government should refrain from playing politics with the sentiments and the aspirations of the Galos,’ said President Binya Ronya.

Furthermore, the GSU has resolved to go ahead with its second phase of agitation, 36 hour bandh from April 10-11 next and third phase from April 17-19next following the failure of the state government in fulfilling its promises made to all the legislators of the Galo community, GWS including all its frontal organisations.

Immediate functioning and posting of DC & SP at Likabali (Lower Siang District), Non-exclusion of any part under 28th Nari Koyu Assembly Constituency from Lower Siang District, Cabinet approval as well as creation of Leppa Rada District are among its 9-point charter of demands.
