Itanagar, Aug 11: Chairman, Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board (APBB), Hawa Bagang today held a general body meeting at the Dr.Verrier Elwin Conference Hall, SFRI, Chimpu. The meeting was attended by H.B.Abo, IFS, Director, SFRI cum Member Secretary, APBB, Senior Scientists from Zoological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India, CSIR-NEIST, Naharlagun, GB Pant, among others.
The daylong meeting deliberated on key initiatives for strengthening biodiversity conservation and promoting orchid heritage in Arunachal Pradesh.
The meeting also extensively discussed the revival of the Orchid Society of Arunachal Pradesh, recognising its role in promoting research conservation and awareness about the states rich orchid diversity. Members agreed on a roadmap to rejuvenate the society and expand its outreach through scientific collaboration and community engagement.
A major highlight was the discussion on the project plan for declaring Arunachal Pradesh as the “Orchid Capital” leveraging the states unparalleled variety of or orchid species. The proposal aims to boost conservation efforts, enhance eco-tourism potential, promoting the native orchid species and establishing Arunachal as a global hub for orchid research.
During the meeting the importance of Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act, 2023 and the role of Biodiversity Management Committees was also highlighted. The forum also deliberated on the revival of BMCs across the state. A comprehensive project plan is being prepared based on the State biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (SBSAP) to strengthen the capacity of BMCs, promote sustainable use of resources and to ensure active participation of local communities in biodiversity governance.
The meeting concluded with shared commitment from all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards implementing these initiatives through State Forest Research Institute, State Biodiversity Board and Arunachal Pradesh Research and Development Agency.
