Itanagar, Dec 16: Arunachal Pradesh witnessed an achievement of a magnitude never seen before in its sporting history, as four Wushu athletes from the State delivered an extraordinary performance at the Nordic Open Wushu Championships, held in Sweden from December 12-16, securing an impressive tally of four Gold Medals, one Silver Medal, and one Bronze Medal for India.
This landmark success stands as one of the finest international sporting achievements ever recorded by athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, placing the State firmly on the global Wushu map and bringing unparalleled honour to the nation.
Mepung Lamgu won two Gold Medals in Taijiquan and Taijijian while Mercy Ngaimong clinched Gold Medal in Jianshu. Onilu Tega bagged Gold Medal in 52 kg Category which was followed by Chera Loku winning Silver Medal in Taijiquan including a Bronze Medal in Taijijian.
This extraordinary feat is widely regarded as a historic first, as no previous contingent from Arunachal Pradesh has ever achieved such a remarkable medal haul at a major international Wushu championship. The performance significantly strengthens India’s international standing in Wushu and provides a major impetus towards the qualification pathway and preparations for the upcoming Asian Games scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan.
The Indian contingent was led by Maibam Premchandra, Wushu Coach of SLSA, Sangey Laden Sports Academy Chimpu Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh who served as the Team Coach for the 22-member Indian Wushu team. The team was also officially overseen by Mr. Suhel Khan, appointed as the Observer for the Indian Wushu Team, whose supervision ensured technical compliance, discipline, and smooth coordination throughout the championship.
 John Tara Bakey, General Secretary, All Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association (AAPWA), extended heartfelt congratulations to the athletes and described the achievement as “a golden chapter in the sporting history of Arunachal Pradesh.” He stated that this unprecedented success reflects years of dedication, discipline, and grassroots development of Wushu in the State, and affirmed AAPWA’s continued commitment to nurturing world-class athletes.
