NEW DELHI, Feb 21: In a disturbing incident highlighting persistent racial prejudice against people from the Northeast, three young women from Arunachal Pradesh have alleged that they were subjected to racist slurs and humiliating remarks by a neighbour in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi.
The incident reportedly took place on February 19 around 4 p.m., when minor drilling work was being carried out in the women’s fourth-floor flat during an air-conditioner repair. Dust that fell to the first floor triggered objections from residents below over the disturbance. However, what began as a routine complaint over construction noise soon escalated into an ugly confrontation.
According to the victims, the neighbour initially mocked the repair worker before turning hostile towards them. They alleged that the argument quickly took a racial turn, with derogatory comments aimed not only at them personally but at people from the entire Northeastern region.
The women claimed that offensive and abusive words were used, and defamatory insinuations were made suggesting that Northeastern women work in spa salons. They also alleged that inappropriate and demeaning remarks were made about their character and profession.
Calling the comments “deeply degrading and discriminatory,” the women said the incident was not just a personal attack but an insult to the dignity of the entire Northeastern community.
Police from both sides reportedly intervened following the escalation, and necessary formalities were carried out at the scene.
In a further development, the building broker later informed the women that they would need to vacate the flat within two months, citing proposed repair and construction work. The women, however, claimed that after speaking with other residents, they found no confirmation of any such planned construction, raising suspicions about the timing of the notice.
