ITANAGAR, Sep 6: Chief Minister Pema Khandu informed the State Assembly on Wednesday that the state government is working on considering the Siang flood to be declared as national disaster considering its seriousness. He said that government is aware of the grave flood situation in the area, adding that the matter will be taken up with the Government of India after detailed survey and investigation of the affected areas.
Khandu was responding to zero hour discussion regarding the “Siang flood declared as National Calamities”, raised by Mebo MLA Lombo Tayeng.
Earlier, while raising the issue, Tayeng said that the constant and massive land erosion of Siang river flood water is of great concern, as the river course is frequently changing causing massive land erosion to the tune of few lakhs hectares of cultivated and fertile cultivable land, besides other properties including buildings are eroded away at Mebo Sub Division in East Siang district.  He told that the area of D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary also reduced down considerably due to constant bank erosion and the people of Mebo Sub-Division in particular are rendered homeless and landless, besides affecting government establishments. The MLA requested the government to take up the issue to declare it as national disaster, adding, if adequate measures are not taken, it may be disastrous in near future.
