ITANAGAR, Jul 14: The Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF), consisting of 26 major tribal communities and over 100 sub-tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, has taken a firm stand against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during a recent meeting.
The AITF, has unanimously expressed its opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code within Arunachal Pradesh.
While opposing its implementation in the state, AITF supported the UCC implementation in mainland India however said that Arunachal Pradesh's unique characteristics, including its demography, topography, social system, customary laws, and indigenous culture, necessitates the exclusion of the state from the Uniform Civil Code's jurisdiction. 
AITF in its statement, stressed the importance of safeguarding customary laws and customary rights, invoking Article 371 of the Indian Constitution to protect the cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
Further,  AITF emphasized the value of existing regulations, such as the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873, and the Chin Hills Regulation, 1896. These regulations play a critical role in preserving the indigenous culture, customs, traditions, and landholding interests of Arunachal Pradesh, it added. 
AITF also expressed concern about potential disruptions to the state's delicate demographic balance due to an influx of refugees through neighboring Assam.
The AITF has appealed to policymakers to consider the collective views of all Community Based Organizations (CBOs) operating under its umbrella. 
The AITF's opposition to the proposed Uniform Civil Code implementation marks a significant development in the ongoing discussions. It highlights the importance of preserving the diverse cultural and social fabric of Arunachal Pradesh while protecting the indigenous identity of the state, added  AITF in its release.
