ITANAGAR, Mar 2: The Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) has urged the district administration to grant permission for a peaceful protest against the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978, scheduled for March 6. The forum warned that denying permission could escalate tensions, as the protest is a democratic right of the community.
Addressing the media, ACF President Tarh Miri reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to moving forward with its resolution to demand a complete repeal of APFRA-1978. He stated that the protest would be peaceful and within the bounds of the law.
Echoing similar sentiments, ACF Secretary General James Techi Tara cautioned the government against any actions that could provoke unrest by refusing permission for the demonstration. “We are peaceful and law abiding citizens. We have only sought permission to hold a peaceful protest, and denying this right will only provoke tensions,” he stated. However, he made it clear that ACF remains firm on its decision to proceed with the agitation on March 6 next, regardless of the administration’s stance.
Additionally, Tara criticized the Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) for allegedly involving ACF and the Christian community in their discussions on APFRA in the recently held Sadbhavana Pad Yatra. He emphasized that IFCSAP should directly appeal to the government if they have any concerns regarding the Act rather than dragging ACF’s name or the Christian community into their events. He also claimed that while the court has directed authorities to frame rules related to APFRA, no clear order for its implementation has been issued.
