ITANAGAR, Jun 12: In a show of solidarity with the Christian community affected by the recent violence in Manipur, the Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) organized a candle march in Itanagar on Monday. Thousands of Christian believers from various denominations gathered, holding placards, banners, and candles, and marched from the Akashdeep complex to the Tennis Court.
President of ACF, Tarh Miri, strongly condemned the violent incidents in Manipur and called upon both the Centre and the Manipur government to find a peaceful and amicable solution. The outbreak of violence, which involves the burning of religious centers and loss of lives, is a rare occurrence in the Northeastern region. According to ACF, such incidents began to escalate after 2014.
Miri, emphasized that the ACF does not hold any bias nor is in support of any particular community. The purpose of the march was to unite in prayer, hoping for peace to prevail in the violence-hit state of Manipur.
Further, the ACF President highlighted the issue of religious discrimination in Arunachal Pradesh, specifically in the Tawang District, where the administration is allegedly obstructing the construction of a church. Despite the requirement for a status quo, the administration has allegedly failed to adhere to its own regulations. ACF expressed disappointment in Chief Minister Pema Khandu's lack of action in resolving the Tawang Church issue, as he had assured to convene a joint meeting with the ACF, said the President ACF.
The candle march organized by the Arunachal Christian Forum serves as a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a plea for peace amidst the recent violence in Manipur. The ACF continues to advocate for religious freedom and fair treatment of all communities in Arunachal Pradesh as well as in other states, added Miri.
