PASIGHAT, May 21: After nearly a decade since its establishment in 2013, Arunachal Pradesh University (APU), the first state university in Pasighat, is gearing up to commence its academic activities in the upcoming session. However, there are still some obstacles that require the attention of the state government to ensure the smooth functioning of the university.
"I have already met with the Governor, who also serves as the Chancellor of Arunachal Pradesh University, as well as Chief Minister Pema Khandu, regarding the initiation of academic activities and other essential requirements for running the university. Both officials have shown positive support towards the development," stated Prof. Tomo Riba, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of APU.
The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned that the administrative block is ready, and even if the academic block, which is currently under construction, is not completed, classes can still commence as there are enough rooms available in the administrative block.
Highlighting the significance of the University Executive Council Meeting in commencing operations, Prof. Riba sought permission from the Governor for the same. He further revealed that there is a need for Corpus Funds to ensure the smooth functioning of the university and also to get grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
"During my meeting with the Chief Minister, I requested for the release of a one-time grant for infrastructure development and Corpus Funds. He showed great positivity towards these requirements," added the Vice Chancellor. He further informed that the government has sanctioned Rs. 10 crore this year, and I have decided to keep half for salaries and the remaining amount for furniture and other infrastructure needs.
"While we haven't received any funds yet, I have managed to obtain some furniture and other requirements by borrowing them at my own risk, with the assurance to pay once the sanctioned amount is released by the authorities," said the Vice Chancellor.
When asked about the syllabus and faculty, VC Riba explained that appointing regular faculty members would require both time and financial resources. However, for now, they can initiate the session with guest faculties and focus on non-practical subjects.
There are no quarters for faculties and staff even for VC, so one-time grants for the development would be very helpful. Moreover, as in other states, the government should first complete all the infrastructures and then start the University for its smooth functioning, added VC Prof. Tomo Riba.
