Khonsa, Jul 11: National Fish Farmers Day was observed by the Department of Fisheries, Tirap district in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra at KVK Deomali today.
National Fish Farmers Day is celebrated every year on 10th July since 1957 to demonstrate solidarity with all fisherfolks, fish farmers and concern stakeholders throughout the country.
Earlier, Minister PHE&WS Wangki Lowang in his address said that pisciculture is an important livelihood activity which leads growth and development and prosperity. He also asked the scientists to find ways to artificially breed and culture indigenous varieties of fish and other aquatic animals like crab, frog etc, while assuring his support. Fish pond is like an ATM for farmers which can be sold and used in hour of need, he said.
ZPM Soha said that Deomali is suitable for fish cultivation and cost is less as compared to other parts of the district.
SMS (Fisheries) Phurin Songtheng, briefed about the recent trends in aquaculture like biofloc, RAS technology. He stressed about species diversification and adoption of improved fish species like amur carp fish and jayanti rohu fish. He also talked about fish breeding and hatchery management.
Senior Scientist & Head KVK, N Kumar said that they will work with line departments so that farmers can be trained more effectively.
