Tawang, Jul 27:The 4th Dorjee Khandu Memorial district level badminton championship began with much fanfare at Lumla Badminton Stadium here on Wednesday

West Kameng Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Sonal Swaroop, along with the entourage, paid tribute to late Dorjee Khandu, former Chief Minister of Arunachal, by lighting butter lamps. 
Dr. Swaroop deliberated that badminton mentally and physically develops a man and inculcates sportsman spirit. The lady IAS, who is also the in-charge of Tawang, expressed optimism that the players will make optimum use of the new international standard dual courts and infrastructure provided and the event shall produce high class sportsmen.

Tsering Lhamu, former ZPC and wife of Lumla MLA Jambey Tashi felicitated the chief guest, Dr. Swaroop and guest of honour, Kitpi ZPM Sherap.

Earlier, Lumla ADC and Lumla Sports Club Chairman, RD Thungon, shed light on the biography of the former chief minister.

Goleng Monpa, Senior Public leader and elder brother of late Dorjee Khandu and Kitpi ZPM Sherap also spoke on the occasion.

Thereon, in the inaugural match, the doubles defending champions Nawang Thutan and Tenzin Tsultrim of LSC overpowered D. Riba and Rupak Das, 17- 21, 22- 20 and 21-11 after going down in the first set. In Women's Double, Lham Drema and T.W Bapu of JSC thrashed Koncho Tsomu and Drema Lhamu of LSC, 21-12, 21-7 in straight sets to register thier first win of the tourney.

The shuttling event is organised by Lumla Sports Club conjointly with Tawang Badminton Association and sponsored by the 3 legislators of Tawang. 73 shuttlers from Lumla Sports Club (LSC), Jang Sports Club (JSC) and Monyul Sports Club (MSC), representing their respective constituencies and clubs will rub shoulders, vying for the top honours in the 5-day event. The games of the coveted badminton championship will be held in five categories-Men Single, Men Double, Womens Double,Mixed Double and Veterans.
