GUWAHATI, Feb 5:  Bengaluru based Azim Premji University in collaboration with IndiaSpend and Cotton University, Guwahati held a two-day EarthCheck climate change reporting course in Guwahati’s Cotton University for journalists of the Northeast which was held from February 3-4. 
Over the two days, journalists learnt how to build data-backed and evidence-based narratives, understand the nuance of climate change reporting, and how to spot climate misinformation and disinformation. Various aspects and reasons for climate change in the context of Northeast India were explained at length by experts from climate scientists and how the situation could be checked in future were also explained. The other catching talks of the workshop included- returning to the Brahmaputra, impermanence, erosion, migration on the Brahmaputra, Brahmaputra’s scowling sky and economy of sand, shifting sands and stressed lives and climate change-the missing discourse in the Indian Parliament etc.
The workshop was led by Prof. Santonu Goswami of Azim Premji University, Prof. Rahul Mahanta of Cotton University and Shreya Shah of IndiaSpend along with a diverse faculty from various fields consisting of Govind Ethiraj, Sanjoy Hazarika, Karma Paljor and Sushanta Talukdar. Journalists who were a part of the workshop received training in reporting on climate change, data visualization, and fact-checking. 
The course saw participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur. By completing the two-day certificate course, the participating journalists are on their way to becoming the first cohort of climate change reporters from the Northeast and a part of a larger national cohort. 
Azim Premji University and IndiaSpend will be hosting the next EarthCheck climate change reporting workshop in New Delhi later this month.
