Namsai, Jan 19: In a concerning development, more than 20 vehicles, reportedly loaded with elephants, have been transported from Chongkham and Lathao circles of Namsai district on late night of Saturday.
According to reports, the vehicles entered the region from Pasighat and exited through the Dirak Gate in Lekang, Namsai. This route passes through at least two forest check gates—one at Tengapani area in Lathao and another at Namsai—raising questions about law enforcement measures.
Efforts to contact officials for clarification have yielded little response. The Officer-in-Charge of the Mahadevpur Police Check Gate declined to comment, directing inquiries to the Forest Department. Attempts to reach the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Namsai were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered despite repeated efforts.
Eyewitnesses claim the vehicles involved were heavy transport vehicles, bearing registration numbers reportedly from Gujarat.
