Drug menace, ways to tackle it dominate discussions

GANGTOK, Feb 25: The 19th annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone III concluded on Friday at the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
The valedictory function was attended by Governor of Sikkim, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Speaker, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Chairman, CPA India Region Zone III,  Pasang D. Sona, and Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Arun K. Upreti.
The event had the participation of Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies of India, Members of Parliament, Members of Sikkim Legislature and other dignitaries.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in his brief address hoped that a roadmap has been created during the two-day long conference.He suggested that sensitization of youth to shun drug abuse in the State which is affecting  society negatively needs to be accomplished.
He also raised concerns about the rise of cyber crime and suggested that there needs to be awareness created among citizens especially children about this issue. The valuable suggestions put forth during the conference should help us to move forward for the prosperity for our State, he added.
Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, in his speech said that the two-day long conference was fruitful where various social issues and challenges regarding citizen’s welfare were addressed indepth. He mentioned that the participating dignitaries in the conference have expressed their concerns about many social and ethical issues relating to drug menace.
Birla expressed satisfaction that the representatives have put forth their valuable suggestions for efficient policy making and its implementation for educating the public to overcome drug-related problems. All must work to make “Nasha Mukt Bharat”, he added.
Birla further said that Sikkim has adopted organic farming to ensure long-term protection of the environment and ecology. The State has successfully paved its path towards achieving sustainable development, he added.
He highlighted that Sikkim is blessed with natural resources that can be utilised to its full potential for further promoting tourism. He said that Sikkim has witnessed immense growth in infrastructure development owing to the welfare-centric policies of the State Government. 
Lastly, he said that all participating members of the conference must take the valuable suggestions discussed during the two-day long session and should further push to implement them in their respective states.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, said that drug abuse has become one of the crucial social problems globally and that education and awareness is essential in developing resilience against drug menace. 
Tamang expressed the belief that the CPA Zone III conference would serve as a platform for the policy and law makers to assess a clear roadmap for strengthening good governance and democracy in the country. 
Speaker, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly cum Chairman CPA, Pasang D. Sona, expressed his satisfaction in conducting a fruitful conference with the directions from the Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies of India, Members of Parliament, Members of Sikkim Legislative and other dignitaries. He highlighted on the need to raise issues, discuss and debate for solutions regularly. 
The responsibility of the lawmakers in helping sensitise and channelise the youth of today in controlling the menace is the foremost liability, he added.
