Itanagar celebrated a much quieter festival of lights ‘Diwali’ on Thursday thanks to the Itanagar Capital administration. The high decibel fireworks so far associated with this auspicious festival remained muted ensuring a calmer and more enjoyable festivities.
The Itanagar district administration must be commended for ensuring that the Supreme Court ban was followed to a great extent. The restriction on indiscriminate sale of firecrackers to two days before the festival, restricted timings for bursting only green crackers was successful in ensuring a largely environmental friendly Diwali.
Post Diwali, as smog choked pictures of Delhi circulated on social media, one is thankful of the Supreme Court intervention. The SC recently banned bursting of firecrackers containing Barium salts.
A conscious citizenry and a vigil administration has shown us that the festival of lights can truly be one of joy. The air and noise pollution associated with fireworks is harmful for humans as well as animals and birds. People with respiratory problems have a difficult time due to the heightened pollution level.
As a progressive society, it is about time to entirely give up fireworks and embrace a eco-friendly Diwali.
