TAWANG, Apr 9: State Agriculture Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu chaired a comprehensive review meeting of seven departments in Tawang district on Tuesday, emphasizing the need to transform the region into an organic farming hub.
The meeting brought together department heads from Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary, Fisheries, KVK, Civil Supply, and Legal Metrology, who presented detailed reviews on the progress, status, and challenges of their respective departments.
Minister Wangsu, who holds multiple portfolios including Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Fisheries, Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, and Food & Civil Supply, received detailed presentations on ongoing projects and their financial status across the district.
In his address, Wangsu commended the officers for their work but emphasized that "we have a long way to go." He highlighted the importance of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and urged officials to motivate and provide hands-on support to local farmers.
A key focus of Wangsu's address was his vision to establish Tawang as an organic district. "In this health-conscious world, where people want to eat good food, Tawang is known for many positive attributes. Using chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides would be a stigma to the good name of the district," he stated. The Minister expressed his desire for Tawang to become "a role model for organic productions," believing other districts would follow suit.
Wangsu called for continued interdepartmental discussions, stakeholder engagement through workshops, protection of local germplasm, and emphasized the importance of supplying quality seeds, feeds, and breeds to farmers. He encouraged officers to "work off the beaten track" and keep the department updated on district progress.
Agriculture Commissioner Bidol Tayeng, who was also present at the meeting, urged officers to effectively implement newly adopted policies for Agriculture and Horticulture while expressing concerns about Atma Nirbhar scheme implementation.
Prior to the meeting, Minister Wangsu conducted an extensive tour of agricultural facilities across Tawang, visiting a walnut garden and greenhouse at Khartoth, a kiwi garden at Audung, Tawang Green FPC at Gyangkhar, the Regional Foundation Seed Potato Farm at Changbu, and a government trout farm at Chuje GG. He also inaugurated a mega poly house for nursery at KVK, Tawang.
The day before, Wangsu visited several agricultural facilities in West Kameng district, including the State Cattle Farm, Cattle Breeding Farm at Warjung in Dirang, Trout Farm at Nuranang in Jang Sub-division, a high-tech poly house NEC beneficiary site at Kharsa, a state-of-the-art cattle farm at Lemberdung, and the Veterinary Dispensary and Government Fish Farm at Bhalukpung.
The Minister's extensive tour and review meeting underscores the government's commitment to agricultural development in the region, with a special focus on organic farming practices.
