ITANAGAR, Sep 8: Garden Dew School, Itanagar, and Don Bosco School, Jollang, emerged as champions in the senior boys’ and girls’ categories respectively at the 4th State Level Inter-School Basketball Tournament.
The event was held from September 1 to 7 at the Royal International School in Papu Nallah.
In the junior categories, Donyi Polo Vidya Bhawan, Itanagar, clinched the boys’ title, while Holy Cross School, Itanagar, secured victory in the girls’ division.
The tournament, organized by the Arunachal Pradesh Basketball Association (APBA), saw participation from over 40 teams across the state, with around 600 athletes competing.
The event, held under the patronage of OSD to education minister Pem Norbu Thongchi, created an electrifying atmosphere as enthusiastic supporters filled the venue.
The grand finale on Saturday was graced by the presence of Aalo West MLA, Topin Ete, who encouraged the young athletes to embrace sports and lauded APBA's efforts in promoting basketball in the state.
Ete in his speech, emphasized the importance of embracing sports and recognized the efforts of APBA in elevating the sport of basketball within the state.
He also appealed to the youths to stay away from drugs and take advantage of the 5 per cent job reservation for youths in various departments as sports quota and 10 per cent in the home department.
APBA president Donyi Ori said the competition at the school level aims to prepare players for higher levels of competition and the association would soon rope in coaches for the players.
Ori also announced that the best players from the tournament will be selected to represent Arunachal Pradesh in upcoming national-level competitions.
He further expressed his gratitude to participants and supporters, affirming its commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting basketball in Arunachal.
Several individual awards were presented during the tournament. Techi Yasin was named Defensive Player of the Year for junior girls, while Dillu Sharma took the same title in the junior boys' category.
For the senior divisions, Sakina Parvin earned the Defensive Player of the Year title for the girls, and Tabia Tubin was named for the boys.
In scoring accolades, Rigam Arti emerged as the highest scorer in junior girls, and Dasun Dukam took the highest scorer award for junior boys.
In the senior categories, Bengia Ajik led the girls' scorers, with Tatung Tamar topping the charts for the boys.
The MVP awards were claimed by Toko Nanda for junior girls and Dasun Dukam for junior boys, while Bengia Ajik and Nabam Takar Hina were named MVPs for senior girls and boys respectively.
