ITANAGAR, Apr 8: In a major breakthrough under the ongoing Operation Dawn 2.0, the Itanagar Police apprehended a suspected drug supplier from within the premises of the Civil Secretariat, resulting in the seizure of a significant quantity of suspected heroin.
The incident unfolded around 2:40 PM on Monday last, when police received a telephonic tip-off from a staff member at the Secretariat. According to the report, alert security personnel had confined a suspected drug peddler inside a bathroom located on the third floor of Block No. 3. The individual was suspected to have entered the high-security government complex with the intention of selling narcotics.
Responding swiftly to the tip-off, a police team led by SDPO  Kengo Dirchi and comprising Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, SI Kenter Tacha, and the PS ready party, rushed to the location. The operation was carried out under the overall supervision of SP Itanagar,Rohit Rajbir Singh, IPS.
The suspect was identified as  Vicky Chetry, 32, temporary  resident of Zero Point near Gompa in Itanagar, while his permanent address traces back to Borgolai Milan Nagar in Tinsukia District, Assam. He is currently employed as a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) in the Horticulture Department.
A personal search of the accused was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses including Oli Koyu, First Class Magistrate (NDPS); Bapir Megu, Dy. GA, Civil Secretariat; and  Punyo Obing, SPA. During the search, a number of plastic vials and a tobacco container filled with suspected heroin were recovered, along with used syringes and cash amounting to Rs. 32,760 in various denominations.
Upon interrogation, the accused revealed that he had hidden more contraband behind the bathroom window. A follow-up search in the presence of the same witnesses led to the recovery of additional vials and paraphernalia, including scissors believed to have been used in the preparation of narcotics.
In total, 44.36 grams of suspected heroin were seized from the accused — 36.82 grams in 26 plastic vials and 7.54 grams in a tobacco container. All legal procedures, including search, seizure, weighing, packing, and sealing of the contraband, were carried out strictly in accordance with the NDPS Act, 1985. A formal case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress.
The Itanagar Police emphasized that this successful operation, carried out in a highly sensitive and secure government zone, highlights their continued efforts to dismantle drug supply networks across the capital. The department also lauded the Civil Secretariat staff for their vigilance and timely assistance in making the arrest possible.
