ITANAGAR/GUWAHATI , Mar 20: In a significant development, the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the Assam Cabinet has approved the issuance of Permanent Resident Certificates (PRCs) for the Moran community residing in Arunachal Pradesh.
This decision aims to provide equal rights and opportunities to the Moran people living in Arunachal Pradesh, aligning their benefits with those enjoyed by residents of Assam. The move was initially announced by Sarma during the Moran Mahotsav in Makum, Tinsukia district, on January 28, 2024, where he stated that the Assam government would grant PRCs to Moran community members in Arunachal Pradesh specially in Lekang constituency and some other pockets of the Namsai and Changlang district.
While speaking to the media on the cabinet decision taken today by the Assam Government, CM Sarma further assured reservations for the community in competitive exams, such as those conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), seat reservations in Medical colleges to enhance their access to government jobs and educational opportunities in Assam.
The Moran Community settled in Lekang Constituency of Namsai District has been demanding PRC from the state government of Arunachal Pradesh for a very long time. Recently, the students organization of the Moran community boycotted the Statehood Day of Arunachal Pradesh over the issue.
